Magically enchanting and much loved, Paris, the Urban Empress of Europe, remains eternally young. Sometimes vain, and always passionate, the legendary city is also extremely expensive for visitors. Often you have to hold on to your wallet and hope for the best.

Many hotel room rates are beyond the reach of travelers. Dining in Paris is also a heavy hit even in the little cafes on the backstreets where alley cats roam. A marvelous alternative is to rent a private apartment and enjoy your holiday without the nagging thoughts of credit card syndrome.

Paris Sejour Reservations, Inc. (PSR), a company specializing in renting privately owned, tastefully decorated vacation apartments offer a whopping inventory of more than 600 units throughout the city, including the timeless neighborhoods of Champs-Elysees, the Latin Quarter, and fashionable Saint-Germain.

My rental apartment on the Left Bank at 18 Rue Guisarde was in an XVIII Century building, typical of the Saint-Germain-des-Pres area. It overlooked a narrow, one-way street in the heart of Saint-Germain, and reminiscent of an earthy Hollywood movie set. Rue-Guisarde, lined with 13 or so cafes, is where one could spend months sipping wine, people-watching, and soaking in the city's legendary flair for life.

The vacation apartment had a bathtub perfect for a nice book and a sip or two of champagne; a wall-mounted hairdryer, a complete kitchen with refrigerator, dishwasher, washer-dryer, oven, and microwave. The efficient kitchen was as big as your thumb but ideal when planning a lingering candle-lit dinner with soft jazz piano.

Guests are also greeted with a platter of cheese and a nice selection of wine. Paris France can be a moveable feast if you know how to caress the Eternal City.
