john pennekamp Until the famous movie, this town was known as Rock Harbor. You won't see Bogie or Bacall here, but you can ride the African Queen and there are some incredible attractions here - underwater parks, hotels and an underwater shrine.

  • The first underwater park in the USA, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, offers the easiest way to view the Florida reef. Ranger led programs, and equipment rentals are available for snorkeling and diving. There are also glass bottom boat trips, walking trails and canoe trails.

  • For diving and snorkeling the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary extends for 20 miles. Elbow Reef is a popular dive site where three major wrecks are located. The most famous site in the park is at Key Largo Dry Rocks - The Christ of the Deep Statue, a 9 foot high, 4000 lb. bronze statue of Christ installed as an underwater shrine.

  • The Key Largo Undersea Park is home to the steel and acrylic building called Jules Undersea Lodge, only accessible by diving. It was originally a research lab but now you can visit or stay overnight. (305) 451-2353

  • Visit the famous Key West Florida.

  • Ride the original African Queen- an antique steam-engined vessel used in the movie. Call for reservations (800) 843-5397.
