Spa Olakino an Affordable Spa in Waikiki
Filed Under Spa, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
Spa Olakino is located at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki in the Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. As the wife of the great MurrayOnTravel I’m a spa buff and seek out spa treatments whenever possible. I would suggest you may want to book a treatment here.
The Spa Olakino is managed by the Paul Brown companies, a local salon in Honolulu. There is definitely a “local style” happening at this spa…..no one is in a big hurry….and that’s not a bad thing when you are in spa mode! The services and prices make up for any lassitude at the front counter.
The greatest feature about the Spa Olakino is the quiet area. Lava rock, island flowers and an eye level view of Waikiki Beach will captivate you as you relax and wait for you treatment. This lounge area has 8 or so comfy chases, a full tea service and plenty of fashion magazines. Plan to hang out here—it’s a peaceful place overlooking the turquoise water and you don’t have to put on sun screen.
The sitting area is fabulous and I could stay there all day, however, the shower, bathroom area is not up to par with other spas. Perhaps that is why the Spa Olakino describes itself as a “boutique spa”. There is only one shower, two bathroom stalls and one sink and a tiny area to undress. You won’t have much privacy in this area; however, over the years I’ve been to this spa 3 times and rarely see more than one or two people at a time.
The Spa Olakino features a Magic Island Massage, 80 minutes for $160, body wraps with pure Hawaiian spirulina, 75 minutes include 25 minutes LomiLomi massage for $155 and Papaya Pineapple facial, 60 minutes for $130.
If these prices are too much for your budget, then you have to check out the Early Bird and Night Owl spa specials! Great treatments for great prices! The Early Bird Specials will suit you well because you will probably be waking up at 5:30 am because of the time change; take advantage of it. I had a 25 minute scalp massage and a 25 minute mini facial for about $100. The specials are from 8 am to 10 am or 8 pm to 9 pm everyday.
Each treatment room is decorated with a Hawaii theme. For example, lava rock walls, stone sinks and a dark décor adorn each room. All spa treatments incorporate Hawaiian-influenced products and there is a small boutique to shop for products. I have never been “sold’ to after a treatment and I like that about the Spa Olakino. The last thing I want is to be pressured to buy a mud pack after a relaxing, expensive spa experience.
The Spa Olakino also offers full Salon services at reasonable prices.

Pride Of America Cruises Hawaii
Filed Under Cruises, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
I’ve been writing about the problems that Norwegian Cruise Lines has had operating ships in the Hawaiian Islands since the first ship arrived in the islands in July 2004. You would think that cruising and Hawaii would be a match made in paradise, but it hasn’t been.
Over the years NCL has had four different ships working the islands, today only one remains, the Pride Of America. The other ships have been relocated and renamed the Pride Of Aloha is now the Norwegian Sky and is sailing three- and four-night Bahamas cruises out of Miami.
I’ve cruised on several of the ships, but I’ve written mostly about my interviews of exiting passengers. I lived for four years not far from Honolulu Harbor and started to despise my weekend trips to greet the arriving passengers. It wasn’t easy. Especially later in the morning as I would start to meet cruisers waiting to board the ship just after have interviewed angry exiting passengers.
During my recent trip to Honolulu I decided to stop by the harbor again and see what passengers had to say. The Pride Of America no longer arrives at the beautiful Aloha Tower complex but at Pier 2.

Waikiki Beach Marriott - Part 2
Filed Under Hotels / Resorts, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
This is my second posting about the Waikiki Beach Marriott, don’t miss part 1. This posting is mostly photographs of the resort, and beach.

View from “Partial Oceanview” room on the 23rd floor of the Kealohailani Tower.

View of Diamond Head from room 2314 Kealohailani Tower.

Marriott’s pool is small but offers a large sundeck. A second small pool is also available toward the back of the resort.

Pool looks larger here than it is….

Two great restaurants in the Marriott are “Sansei” and “D.K. Steak House”. (NOTE: for breakfast head down the street to “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. Skip the buffet at the Marriott.)

Small gym offers machines and free weights but can become quickly crowded.

Hotel as seen from the water.

Beach just in front / across the street from the Marriott. The protection of a seawall makes it great for a relaxing dip. Also great for kids. Beaches with direct ocean exposure are just steps away.

On my last day I told the Marriott that I was writing about the property and asked to see a Oceanfront room. This is the room.

This oceanfromt room has windows looking south toward the beach, and a side balcony with a great view.

Bathroom is larger than the standard rooms, offering separate bath & shower. But our smaller room had a seperate toilet/tub room which I like.

Eva (west) facing oceanview balcony in the Kealohailani Tower. This is a oceanfront room but I suspect most of the rooms on this side of the Kealohailani Tower, above the 10th floor would have excellent views. Also note that Waikiki is a busy city, the higher you get the less street noise you will hear.

View out southern / oceanfront side of the Marriott

Great View! You can see that the Waikiki Beach Marriott isn’t right on the beach…you need to cross a busy 4 lane street at the crosswalks.

House Without A Key at the Halekulani Hotel
Filed Under Restaurants, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off

The Halekulani Hotel is one of the best resort hotels not just in Hawaii, but the world. It is often ranked at or near the top of the annual “best of” travel lists. So it’s not surprising that one of the best oceanfront lounges, House Without a Key, would be located at the Halekulani Hotel.
I visited the House Without a Key last night and it featured classic Hawaiian music played outside by a three piece combo and accompanied by former Miss Hawaii’s Kanoe Millera an excellent hula dancer. This is a must do / see spot. I visited this Waikiki landmark last night to enjoy the sunset, one that was sadly cloud covered, but the entertainment made up for the absent sunset. This experience is not unlike the sunset rituals that occur worldwide, like in Key West FL.

The guest can sit at low cocktail tables, great for drinks and pu-pus (appetizers) or standard tables better suited for enjoying the light dinner menu.
If your planning a visit arrive early, it fills up fast. Call for times, right now the entertainment runs from 5:30-8:30. Dress is toward the higher end of resort casual. Drinks and food are a bit expensive, but it is worth it to enjoy this one-of-a kind experience known worldwide as Sunset At The House Without A Key.
Official House Without a Key Website - Halekulani Website
Note: The Halekulani also is home to two award winning restaurants, Orchids and LaMer. I’ve dined at both and they are excellent.
Inside Tip: If your considering a desert toward the end of the evening at House Without A Key you may want to consider something that is not on the menu… Ask your server if they could get you the manager. Ask the manager if it would be at all possible for you to have a soufflé delivered from the nearby LeMer kitchen. This is very much outside the norm, sometimes the kitchen can’t accommodate, but most times they can. Nothing beats soft music, gentle Hawaiian breezes, and a warm soufflé.

Tiki’s Grill & Bar Restaurant
Filed Under Restaurants, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off

Tiki’s is located at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki beach in the Resort Quest Waikiki Beach Hotel. Heading up a few flights of steps takes you above the chain restaurants and to the surprisingly good Tiki’s Grill and Bar.
The tiki bar atmosphere is very hip right now, but Tiki’s has been one of the better casual restaurants along Waikiki Beach. Don’t go for the view, it’s OK, but go for the good food and reasonable prices. This is the only real restaurant in the Resort Quest Hotel, so it appears they put some effort into making it good.
Tiki’s - Website - WebCam - Address: 2570 Kalakaua Ave
We went for lunch yesterday, I had the Grilled Steak Sandwich and my guests had salads and Hawaiian Ahi Poke. We also tried something new, locally made Waialua Soda Works bottled sodas, the Mango and Pineapple. Both the soda’s and food were excellent.

The restaurant offers both inside and outside seating. Located just across the street from the beach the patio is comfortable taking advantage of the ocean breezes. Inside is dark and cool with a tiki bar decor. The third floor palm tree height location causes the view to be more of a tree top view than an ocean view but it’s nice to be above the busy street and sidewalk activity.

Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach Marriott
Filed Under Hotels / Resorts, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
My faith has been restored in major chain hotels! Last months crappy room at the Vegas Hilton, makes today’s room at the Waikiki Beach Marriott seem like paradise. Well maybe it’s because I’m in Paradise / Hawaii.
(NOTE: This is posting #1 - Don’t miss part 2)
Check-in was smooth at the Marriott. The reservation was made by my travel agent, via Pleasant Holiday’s. It included a welcome lei at the airport, 5 nights in a partial ocean view room, $25 per day resort credit, and a car for 5 days. Cost me $1200 including tax, and the taxes here in Hawaii are steep. Not a great price, but a good one.
Why the Marriott? My Wife and I lived here on Oahu for almost 4 years and we have been all over the Islands. And two of our favorite restaurants are right here in the Marriott, DK Steakhouse and Sansei.
The front desk said our room was “recently upgraded”, last time I heard that line I was very disappointed, but today it was true. Our room is very comfortable and well appointed with a view of Diamond Head and the slice of the Pacific and Waikiki Beach.

More Entertainment at the Kahala Hotel & Resort, Oahu Hawaii
Filed Under Hotels / Resorts, USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
When in Oahu one of my favorite hotels is the Kahala Hotel & Resort located just outside the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. While living on Oahu the Kahala became one of my favorite hang-outs. Travelers will enjoy the 800 feet of beach, and the fact it is 10 minutes from Waikiki. That 10 minutes can sometimes feel like a time machine taking you away from the noise and traffic into the calm atmosphere of the Kahala. Note: this accommodation was previously known as the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Resort.

Photo provided by Kahala Resort Hotel.
The latest news from the resort is that it has started to improve their entertainment. Bringing in two of the Islands top talents, Hapa and the Brothers Cazimero. Also jazz is offered nightly in the lobby lounge, The Veranda, from 7:30-10:30pm. I think this may be the longest running jazz venue on the Island. The Veranda also offers afternoon tea for those that want to enjoy a little of the elegance of times past.
I would often assist photographer friends of mine who were working at the Kahala. It is a great location for weddings, and after that we would collapse in one of the restaurants or the bar, often seeing celebrities who were working on the island.
I would often dine at the Sushi restaurant Tokyo Tokyo, and the excellent Hoku’s. Both were worth the extra effort for us to drive over for dinner. We often would see some of my clients at these restaurants, along with a few of my wife’s customers.
Another favorite spot of mine at the Kahala is dinning outside near the pool. A few tables are located just between the pool and beach, they are worth the wait. I think these tables offer some of the best table views on the Island of Oahu or anywhere in Waikiki. When considering the beach cafe menu, don’t miss “The Kahala Burger” like pizza from Big Kahuna Pizza, or the Boot’s & Kemo’s Mac Pancakes, this burger will bring you back time and again.
My wife often reserved blocks of rooms at the hotel, then known to locals as the Kahala Mandarin, for business meetings. She always found the rooms very comfortable and the staff helpful, unlike some hotels that were not particularly friendly to local business meetings.

Another reason we often would visit the Kahala Resort & Hotel was the Dolphin Quest swim with the dolphins pool. It was one of the first places we would take our visiting guests, either to watch or participate.
While living on Oahu, I traveled almost every inch of the Hawaiian Islands. And one of the places I miss are the most is visiting and the dinning with friends at Kahala Resort.

Is Hawaii The Perfect Honeymoon Destination?
Filed Under USA - Hawaii | Comments Off
Hawaii, with its picturesque blue sea, sandy beaches, and dramatic mountain scenery, is not surprisingly one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world. A romantic Hawaiian honeymoon, at one of the many resorts, hotels and condos that cater to newlyweds, is the perfect way to create special memories for years to come and create that special post wedding bond.
With romantic surroundings, there are properties in all price ranges, from ultra luxury to budget. And should you decide to have the wedding in Hawaii as well, you can choose a wedding/honeymoon packages that includes a chapel or beach service, a delicious wedding banquet complete with music, and honeymoon lodging at an island resort hotel.
Upscale couples looking for privacy should consider the secluded Manele Bay Four Seasons Lanai. Located on the beach, on the pristine private island of Lanai, the resort borders a marine preserve, has exceptional ocean and coastline views, and offers an exclusive spa and fine dining.
But Hawaii weddings don’ have to be large expensive affairs and you may decide a simple civil ceremony in a romantic setting, say on a beach or in a fragrant garden.
Less expensive spots include The Outrigger Royal Kahana, with kitchen facilities, on Maui’s Kaanapali Beach, and the moderately priced Miramar, sited just a few blocks from the beach at Waikiki, surrounded by shops and restaurants, with good public transportation.

On Kauai, The Princeville Resort, is an excellent luxury resort, or you might consider a more intimate surroundings of a condominium resort like as The Whalers Cove, in the Poipu Beach area, with its spacious units set on a secluded cove that is perfect for water sports such as snorkeling and diving.

Maui offers several options if your looking for seclusion and luxury service, consider the smaller Hotel Hana Maui, with its plantation-style cottages complete with hot tubs. You can horseback ride along the Hana Coast, and relax afterward in their wonderful spa. Golfers could try the Kapalua Resort on the West Coast of Maui, where three championship golf courses will satisfy the keenest golfers.
A Hawaiian island honeymoon can be as unique as your interests. You can spend time on a remote beach, or experience the fun of shopping, dining and nightlife. The best time to visit Hawaii depends more on the location than any particular season. The leeward sides, the western and southern coasts, have the calmest waters and the driest and sunniest conditions.
Although rainfall is common throughout the year the rainy season is from November to April . During the winter, December to February, you will often find some stormy weather, although rain usually falls in short showers during daytime. The “high” travel seasons, when hotel rates can be higher, are between January and March, June and August, and during the Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays.
